Corey Rubenstein is an exceptional trial lawyer and investigator with three decades of experience—both as a federal prosecutor and in private practice. Law360 named him a “Legal Lion,” and he has been repeatedly selected by Leading Lawyers and Illinois Super Lawyers for his white-collar criminal defense and trial work. In addition to white collar defense, Corey’s practice focuses on commercial litigation, internal investigations, and compliance counseling. He represents public and private companies and their directors, officers, and employees in varied and highly-regulated industries, licensed professionals, municipalities, public officials, independently-owned businesses, and other individuals.

Immediately before joining GGE, Corey served for six years as an Assistant United States Attorney in Chicago. During that time, he tried numerous criminal cases and led many of the most notable securities and financial fraud investigations and prosecutions for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. For example, he led the prosecution of California lawyer Tom Girardi—known for inspiring the movie Erin Brockovich and for his role on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills—alleging Girardi’s Ponzi-scheme misappropriation of client trust funds. Corey also investigated and obtained convictions of an Art Institute of Chicago manager for a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme, a hedge fund promoter for a $23 million FinTech investment scheme, and a Citibank Vice President for defrauding clients in a “movie” investment scheme. He also spearheaded a multi-agency investigation into the fraudulent promotion and manipulation of a digital currency called Meta1 Coin, resulting in the founder’s indictment.

Prior to his stint as a federal prosecutor, Corey spent two decades as a partner of the renowned white-collar litigation boutique, Stetler, Duffy & Rotert. In private practice he:

  • Defended the Chicago City Treasurer against extortion charges at trial and in a successful appeal.
  • Represented BP’s lead engineer in the numerous criminal, civil, and environmental investigations and litigation matters resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
  • Defended the town lawyer for Cicero in the RICO trial against Betty Loren-Maltese and the “Cicero Seven.”
  • Represented one of the largest Chicago-based consturction companies in a $500 million False Claims Act investigation, resulting in a declination of criminal charges.
  • Obtained an acquittal after trial and appeal for the founder of a prescription benefit management company charged with bribing a government procurement officer.
  • Obtained dismissals after trial and appeal of criminal OSHA charges against the nation’s largest electrical contracting company.

Corey also has conducted numerous internal investigations for corporate clients and municipalities, and he has represented companies and individuals in a variety of business disputes and other commercial litigation matters.

Corey started his career as an associate at McDermott, Will & Emery. He graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1995 and from the University of Michigan in 1992 with a B.A. in political science, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa.
